Sleep wellness for the colder months

Building your sleep space (for storms, snow and winter chill)

Working with what you’ve got.

Taking your Pinterest board out of the picture, your dream sleep space doesn’t have to cost you much extra time, money or effort. A shopping trip might be tempting, but try looking around your home first. The things that are already you — the pieces that have lasted, hold memories, that have been quietly doing their job for years — are usually the ones to bring you comfort.

What can you change without venturing out?

Try gathering linens, décor, cushions or lighting from other rooms and experimenting with them in your bedroom. You'll quickly figure out what’s missing, and more importantly, what you actually feel drawn to. Anything you buy afterwards becomes more intentional — and more sustainable.

Textures, tones & softer materials

As temperatures continue to fall, lean into what feels inviting. Think fleecy throws, brushed cotton sheets, wool blankets or a colour palette shift. Warmer tones, deeper neutrals and overall earthy colour bring immediate cosiness to your space. The change from brighter to darker days can bring the desire for a complete revamp, but certain shades can last all year.Bringing both comfort and a sense of grounding — these earthy hues are timeless, too. When winter’s gone, you might realise they carry beautifully into spring — a palette you can build on, not switch out.

Scent, atmosphere

Scent plays a bigger role in relaxation than we realise — but it’s personal. Certain smells evoke strong moments and memories that we might cherish, or we might have buried. Some scents like cinnamon, vanilla, cedarwood or lavender are especially calming and bring us back to nature. Light a candle, or try a wax melt as the early evening creeps in — just choose a herbal blend that suits your spirit and soothes you on colder nights.

Lighting

Daylight’s fading fast in the afternoon. It can feel strange and sleepy, but it’s nature’s call for us to slow our schedules. Gently adjust your lighting to guide your body into rest mode. Swap harsh overhead lights for lamps, warm bulbs, dimmers and fairy lights. Embrace what’s left of natural light. If you love golden hour, don’t take it for granted. When the sun begins to set — slow down, reflect or watch the light shift. Make it a moment for you.
